Sir Joshua

Nineteen years ago I wrote a poem to my, then, only child.

It started like this:

Oh noble little man of mine whose years add just three,
Sweet Knight in somewhat shining armor come to rescue me.

And rescue me he did. Back then he rescued a very young mom with many hugs, lots of smiles and plenty of laughter in what were dark and troublesome times.

There has always been something authentically noble about Joshua. In my heart he has ever been a gentleman and an honorable young man.

Maybe some would disagree.

But a mother has different eyes. She sees her child for what he or she strives to be and what they would be, rather than what they might foolishly fill their lives with at the moment.

He is still my noble Knight coming to the rescue. One of the many heroes serving our country. Stationed here for now, but I know that soon he will be in Iraq.

It is the highest form of service, of sacrifice, laying down your life for the sake of your brother.

That is Sir Joshua.

And today Joshua turns 22 years old.

Happy Birthday son! You make your mother very, very proud!!

  1. I have to agree with you on the "honorable" part . He is without a doubt the most impressive young man I know. Even when confronted with the discovery of some disdainful actions on his part, he didn't try to blame others or situational circumstance, he owned up to it,and like a man, he followed through to correct them. I'm proud of what the Lord has done in Josh's life, and when my younger son seeks a role model, I pray he looks up to his big brother. GO ARMY!!!

  6. Joshua meaning 'God rescues'. Joshua was also one of the twelve spies sent into Canaan by Moses in the Old Testament. After Moses died, Joshua succeeded him as leader of the Israelites.

What an appropriate name for such a handsome young soldier. Who knows what God has in store for this Joshua.

  7. Ali,
Yes! I wasn't a Christian when I named him, but when I became one and learned the meaning of the name I was excited. You see, his last name is Davidson. Joshua is also a form of Jesus, Son of David.

Thank you so much for your insight, encouragement and friendship!

  11. Meg -
"A guid New Year to ane an' a' and mony may ye see"

My husband and I disagree on the translation. He claims your grandfather was saying "A good New Year to any and all and money may you see."

I think he said "A good New Year to any and all (or something like that) and many may you see."

So, to help make this New Year start off with peace, will you settle that for us?

    Thanks for the blessings!

    Jenni,
Thank you for the prayers, they are much appreciated!
